Fluorooxetanes of formula in which R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> are hydrogen or alkyl groups are prepared by heating alkanols of formula R<SP>1</SP>R<SP>2</SP>C(OH)CF 2 CHClF in an alkaline medium. Examples are given of the preparation of 2 - methyl - 3,3,4 - trifluorooxetane and 2,2-dimethyl-3,3,4-trifluorooxetane.
