Abstract
1,231,428. Stamping. PRESSED STEEL FISHER Ltd. 20 Nov., 1969 [27 Nov., 1968], No. 56237/68. Heading B3Q. Apparatus for shaping sheets 33 of superplastic alloy comprises a blank-holder 25 mounted between a platen 16 supporting forming tool 28 and a platen 19 having an airpressure manifold 20, heaters 22 in the manifold and means 31, 32 for sealing and clamping the blank. The platens 16, 19 are guided by corner posts 12 and moved by hydraulic cylinders 15, 18, the blank-holder 25 having a small amount of vertical movement in brackets 24 on the posts 12. Cooling fluid is fed to coils 23 on the upper platen and to a coil 27 on the blank holder 25. Compressed air is fed at 21 to the manifold 20 for forming the blank over the concrete or cast-iron die 28 which has passages 29 permitting a partial vacuum to be applied beneath the blank and ejection of the formed blank by compressed air. Operation.-After conditioning the blank to exhibit superplasticity, it is mounted on the clamping member 31 and the upper platen 19 is lowered to clamp the blank. The radiant heaters 22 are energized to heat the blank and coolant is forced through the coils 23, 27. The die 28 is raised and air is admitted to conform the blank to the die. An hydraulic or fluid logic control system may be used.
