Abstract
1,231,367. Centrifugal separators. WESTFALIA SEPARATOR A.G. 30 Jan., 1970 [28 Feb., 1969], No. 4735/70. Heading B2P. In a centrifugal separator comprising a rotary drum 1 surrounded by a collector casing 2 for centrifuged material, and a base member 4 housing means, e.g. a worm wheel 6, for driving the drum spindle 7, sealing means 21 between the base member 4 and the casing 2 is arranged to be movable into a closed position to seal the member 4 from the casing 2 so that when the separator is sterilized with superheated steam the steam is prevented from entering the space 5 within the base member. The drum may be provided with openings 8 through which centrifuged solids are periodically ejected into a chamber 10 in the casing 2. The chamber 10 communicates through an annular clearance 16 with an intermediate chamber 17 which in turn communicates with the space 5 by way of an annular clearance 18 and a journal bearing 19. The sealing means 21 may be in the form of a hood having a passage and openings 21a through which operating fluid, for the actuation of a sliding piston which opens and closes the openings 8 in the drum, is supplied to a chamber 31 from a line 20. Alternatively, the line 20 opens direct in the chamber 31. The sealing means 21 is secured to a cylindrical member 22 slidably guided in the bottom 3 of the housing 2 and sealed thereto by means of a sealing ring 30. Movement of the member 22 may be effected by rotatable pins 24 having eccentric boss portions 23 engaging in recesses in the member 22, so that the sealing means 21 can be caused to move axially upwards so as to make contact with a sealing ring 27 in the hub 26 of the drum thereby to close the annular clearance 18 when the drum is stationary and superheated steam is fed through the inlet 29 and escapes through the openings 8 into the chambers 10 and 17. In another embodiment, the separator drum has solid walls. The separated solids collect in the drum whilst the separated liquid is discharged in the casing surrounding the drum.
