Abstract

1,231,258. Facsimile apparatus. MUIRHEAD Ltd. 10 July, 1969 [20 Sept., 1968], No. 44847/68. Heading H4F. The wear on the stylus 16 of a facsimile receiver is distributed along the length of a contact member 20 of the stylus by arranging that the straight writing edge 2, which forms a scanned pinch spot with the contact member 20 of the stylus for applying an electrical signal to a sensitive recording sheet advanced through the pinch spot, is slightly inclined relative to the track 1 along which the carriage 3 bearing the stylus 16 is reciprocated. In the embodiment alternate lines are scanned by different carriages 3 reciprocating in anti-phase on parallel tracks 1. Abutments 4 at the ends of each track 1 strike nylon blocks 11, 12 on push rods mounted on the carriages 3 thereby causing the styli to be pivoted by cam surfaces so that only the stylus moving in the scanning direction is urged towards the writing edge 2, the stylus on the returning carriage being held clear of the writing edge 2. Because the wear on the contact member 20 is distributed it can be of a relatively soft material such as stainless steel.
