Abstract

1,230,853. Washing machines. BRITISH DOMESTIC APPLIANCES Ltd. 12 May, 1969 [13 May, 1968], No. 22607/68. Heading D1A. In a washing machine, the electric heating element 16 is mounted in a sump 15 in the plastics tub 1 and the liquid outlet 14 is such that, on emptying the tub, liquid remains in the sump 15. Within tub I is mounted a rotary clothes basket 2 and a reciprocatable agitator 6 both driven through gearing 4 by electric motor 11 which also drives drain pump 13. The tub 1 &c. are resiliently suspended in a cabinet 9 from a chassis 8 by springs and dampers 7. Thermostats 17 and 19, 20 are secured respectively'to sump 15 and the wall of tub 1 and detect the washing temperature viz. very hot, hot, warm, safety thermostat 17 always being connected in the circuit. The control circuit for the washing machine comprises liquid level switch 22, solenoid valve 23 and the-motor 11, heating element 16, thermostats 17, 19, 20 and a programme controller with drive motor 25, main switch 38, temperature selector 27 and programme switches 26, 31, 33, 36. A brake solenoid 35 is de-energized during agitation so that the brake engages gear box 4 to hold basket 2 against rotation.
