Abstract
1,230,478. Sealing bale ties. SIGNODE CORP. 22 Nov., 1968 [4 Dec., 1967], No. 55530/68. Heading B6P. The strapping tool described in Specification 996,608 is modified by having the toggle mechanism replaced by a wedge-shaped cam 124 attached to the vertically movable ram 100, which cam co-operates with cam follower rollers 170 rotatably mounted to the upper ends of the sealing jaw members 120. The shape of the wedge-shaped cam is such that during the initial descent of the ram a relatively fast jawclosing movement is attained, which results in folding the seal flanges about the overlapping portions of the strapping. This is followed by a slow terminal jaw movement for compressing and notching the seal. To restore the jaws to their open position during upward movement of the ram 100, a lost-motion link connection is provided between the ram 100 and the upper end of each jaw member 120, and comprises a link 176 with a slot 180. Initial upward movement of the ram 100 results in removal of the wedge-shaped cam from the follower rollers 170 during take-up of the lost motion. Thereafter, the links 176 act in toggle fashion to open the jaws to the position where the cam follower rollers 170 touch (Fig. 3).
