Abstract

1,230,377. Pipe couplings. PLESSEY CO. Ltd. 17 June, 1968 [15 June, 1967], No. 27634/67 Heading F2G. [Also in Division H2] A coupling device, for providing mechanical support and electrical connection between two insulating pipes 20, 21, each with mutually isolated conducting layers on its outer surface, comprises two semi-cylindrical parts 1, 2 hinged by pins 8 to a block 7 and held in position around the pipes by a toggle clamp 11. The pipes are located relative to each other, e.g. by a keyway, and are provided with flanges 22, 23 which mate with corresponding recesses in the coupling device. Continuity between the conducting layers on the pipes is effected by a conductive metal strip 16 with a plurality of fingers 18 extending inwardly therefrom riveted to the surface of each recess of the coupling device. Correct alignment of conductive strips and conductors is ensured by pins 19 in block 7. Extension 24 of pipe 20 assists in locating the pipes prior to their being clamped together. A strip 16 may be provided on one only of the parts 1, 2. The pipes may be parts of an aerial boom.
