Abstract

[Also in Division F2] Apparatus for connecting a service pipe 13 to a mains pipe 12 under pressure comprises a plastics connecting piece 14 having a branched boss 22 and a saddle 14A, a stop valve 36 sealingly attachable to the boss and including an expansible plug 37 for closing off fluid flow through the boss, a cutting tool 46 arranged to be introduced through the valve when open to bore the wall of the mains pipe, and a screwed plug (not shown) adapted to be screwed into the boss end after removal of the cutting tool. The saddle is clamped to the mains pipe by bolted segments 16, which have hooked ends 19 engaging lugs 18 on the saddle, and sealed thereto by a seal 29 located in a recess 28. The cutting tool is connected to the squared end of a drill shaft 49 of an assembly sealingly attached to the valve. After boring a hole in the pipe, the shaft and cutting tool are raised above the expansible plug which is moved transversely across the end of the boss and expanded to seal the latter. The drilling assembly may then be removed and the cutting tool replaced on the shaft by the plug. The assembly is replaced on the valve, the plug moved to the open position, and the plug screwed into the boss. The drilling assembly and valve are then removed from the boss and a screw-threaded cap applied to the boss end.
