Abstract
1,228,503. Bearings. PLAS-STEEL PRODUCTS Inc. 5 Feb., 1969 [5 Feb., 1968], No. 6204/69. Heading F2A. A reinforced plastics bearing has an annular core 12 of glass fibres embedded in a cured, hardened plastics material, and a layer of lubricious material 14 on the outer surface of the core, the layer including PTFE. fibres or particles secured in place by a matrix including a cured hardened plastics material. The core may be a<SP> </SP>split annulus whose ends are slightly axially displaced, the core being resilient such that the ends may be moved into alignment. The bearing may be made by forming an elongate bundle of glass fibres 31 and passing them through a vat 33 of liquid resin. The impregnated bundle 32 passes out of the vat and threads of PTFE and cotton, 16, 18 are braided helically about the bundle. The covered bundle is helically wrapped about a rotating mandrel 42 provided with a helical groove 43. Additional impregnant may be provided in the braid by dipping the wrapped mandrel in a bath of lubricant. The mandrel is then placed in a die (54, 56, Fig. 5, not shown) and placed in a curing oven where the plastics material is hardened. After removing from the die, the helical core is cut longitudinally and the individual annular bearings removed from the mandrel.
