Abstract

Articles or material to be heat treated in a furnace 1 are carried through it on a conveyer 4 formed from interfitting serrated edged or tongue and grooved graphite or ceramic slats 5 which are advanced step by step through the furnace by the action of a reciprocating pusher 9. The slats fit on to guide rails (Fig. 2, not shown) extending through the furnace, one of the rails being ridged to fit into corresponding notches in the bottom of the slats to retain them in position, and the other having a flat top on which the slats rest to compensate for their thermal expansion in a lateral direction. The slats may be profiled or provided with apertures extending through them, so that particulate material, if fused or sintered on them, may be formed with desired profiles, thicknesses or apertures. A shoot (not shown) returns the slats from the downstream end of the furnace, to be inserted in front of the pusher, for further use.
