[Also iin Divison F2] Apparatus for rapidly changing a roll on a metal straightener comprises a set of first and second mandrels, 21, 22 a rotatable frame 14 supporting the mandrels and having two positions in which the first and then the second mandrel is brought successively adjacent to and axially aligned with the roll spindle 6, 8 a separate axially movable sleeve 31 on each mandrel having locking means for releasably engaging similar means on each of the rolls, radially compressible quick release retaining means adjacent the outer end of the roll spindle operated by a sleeve when it is moved over the end of the spindle and also by engagement with the inner end of the second roll when it is being mounted on the spindle said retaining means being held in its releasing position by the first roll during its removal from the spindle and by the second roll during its mounting thereon the second roll being initially locked to a sleeve in its retracted position on the second mandrel initially remote from the spindle. The upper bank of rolls 4 is mounted on spindles 6 and the lower bank 7 on spindles 8. Power-operated screw-downs 9 raise and lower the upper spindles 6 and means (not shown) transversely reciprocate the roll housing 2. The roll changing mechanism 11 includes supports 12 for rotatably supporting the frame 14 supporting the pairs of mandrels 21, 22. In the pairs 21 the mandrels 21a and 21b are adapted to be aligned with the upper spindles 6 and in the other pairs 22 the mandrels 22a and 22b align with the lower spindles 8. The frame is rotated by a motor 23 through reduction gearing 24. The mandrel sleeves 31 have radially extending slotted conductors 32 and a flange 33 the connectors engaging with lugs 38 on the outer face of each work roll the connection being effected by rotation of the roll so that the lug enters the slot. Each sleeve is reciprocated by a pressure cylinder 41 and in the retracted position the sleeve is received within a cylindrical cover 48 the outer edge of which acts as a stop for the roll and springs 47 maintain the lugs 38 in the connectors 32. Each work roll is retained on its spindle by quick release retaining means 51 (Fig. 6) comprising spring-loaded pivoted ring segments 52 each having at one end a slot 57 for accommodating a pin 56. Each locking segment has a bevelled edge 58 which engages a similar edge on the adjacent sleeve 31 when the latter is moved towards the straightener. Such movement compresses the segments as shown in Fig. 4 and assists in the locking of the sleeve to the work roll. In a modification the straightening tools are mounted on vertically extending axes (Fig. 7) (not shown).
