Abstract
1,226,320. Flexible reinforced hose. ACMEHAMILTON MFG. CORP. 24 Nov., 1969, No. 57296/69. Heading F2P. A flexible hose comprises an inner layer 11 of elastomeric material, a first reinforcing layer of helically wound laterally spaced untwisted multifilament glass fibre yarns 12, an intermediate elastomeric layer 14, a second reinforcing layer of glass fibre yarns 12A having a lay opposite to that of the first set of yarns 12, and an outer elastomeric layer 15. The elastomeric layers may be formed by extrusion and may consist of natural rubber or of a synthetic rubber such as chloroprene, butadiene-styrene copolymer, butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer or isobutylene-isoprene copolymer. The filaments of the glass fibre yarn are held together by a lightly applied rubber binder. The denier of the yarns may range from about 750 for a hose having an internal diameter of “ inch up to about 10,000 for a hose of 4 inch internal diameter. The glass fibre yarns 12 are preferably applied by a braiding operation, with locating yarns 13 of rayon, cotton or the like which prevent contact between adjacent glass fibre yarns 12. The intermediate elastomeric layer 14 preferably has a thickness of between 0.01 to 0.032 inch. More than one pair of yarn layers 12, 12A may be applied to the hose, each layer being separated from the next by a thin elastomeric layer. In the embodiment shown, the outer elastomeric layer 15 is applied in the form of a helically wound tape. The composite tube 10 is then vulcanized.
