Abstract
1,226,141. Clarification of suspensions by flocculation. DOW CHEMICAL CO. 21 Feb., 1968 [23 Feb., 1967], No. 8435/68. Heading C1C. [Also in Division C3] An aqueous alkaline suspension of solids is clarified by a method which comprises adding an acrylic polymer to the suspension, thereby to flocculate the particles of solids, and thereafter removing the flocculated particles by sedimentation or filtration. The acrylic polymer, which may be added to the suspension to be clarified in the form of an aqueous solution preferably containing from 0.01 to 2.0 weight per cent of polymer, is a homopolymer of acrylic acid, a homopolymer of methacrylic acid, a copolymer of acrylic acid and methacrylic acid or an ammonium, alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salt of such homopolymer or copolymer, the sodium salt of the polymer having a reduced viscosity (defined as the Ostweld viscosity of a 0.4 weight per cent solution of the polymer, when in the form of its sodium salt, in a 0.5 5 normal solution of sodium chloride at a pH of 9 and a temperature of 30‹ C.) of at least 13 centipoises and preferably of at least 30 centipoises when the polymer is a homopolymer of acrylic acid and at least 20 centipoises when the polymer is a homopolymer of methacrylic acid. The polymer also may contain, in an amount which constitutes less than 5 weight per cent thereof, polymeric material derived from styrene sulphonate, acrylamide, N-alkyl substituted amides, acrylonitrile, N-vinyl pyridine, N- vinyl oxazolidinone or N-vinyl pyrrolidone. The suspension of solids to be clarified may be a process stream containing suspended inorganic and/or organic solids, for example a red mud slurry obtained by the alkali digestion of bauxite in the production of alumina (see Example 1), an alkaline clay suspension, for example a slurry of montmorillonite clay in sodium hydroxide solution (see Examples 1 and 2), an alkaline suspension produced in mercerizing operations carried out in textile mills and containing for example suspended fibres, waxes, oils and starch residues (see Example 3) or an alkaline suspension produced in pulping processes, in metal cleaning and conditioning processes, in the treatment of petroleum products or in the processing of food grains for example to remove husks when there results a slurry of - suspended organic solids.
