Abstract

1,226,073. Protective packaging. WILLCOX & GIBBS Inc. 8 Aug., 1969 [9 Aug., 1968], No. 39706/69. Heading B8C. A method of packaging articles comprises the steps of placing an article 10 in a container 11, inserting moist expandible resin particles 13 into the container to surround the article and fill the container to a desired amount, closing the container and subjecting the closed container to RF energy to dielectrically heat the moisture around the particles and provide heat throughout the package to expand the particles and to cause the contacting surfaces of the particles to fuse together. As shown, in which the container 11 is made of cardboard, paperboard laminated sheet or a plastics material, the resin particles are preferably of expandible polystyrene beads. The exterior of the container may be confined and supported in a machine having a frame 18 comprising a container chamber 19 defined by plates 21-25, the plates 21, 22 which carry RF electrodes, being urged to a retracted position by springs 28 and to a position in which they engage the container, by inflatable bags 29. The packaged article 10 is enclosed in a plastics bag 30 or in a metal foil wrapping. Removal of the article 10 from the container may be facilitated by a tearstring to split the container, or by a perforated separator sheet. The bag 30 may be integral with the separator sheet.
