Abstract
1,225,928. Making piston rings. DANA CORP. 23 Sept., 1969 [3 Oct., 1968], No. 46825/69. Heading B3A. [Also in Division F2] An oil control piston ring comprises a split ring 10 having at least two annular bearing surfaces 23 formed by hard, wear-resistant material, e.g. molybdenum, inlaid in peripheral grooves 18 in the piston, the edges of the grooves being chamfered as at 32, 33, 39 and 40. Metallic oxides or metallic carbides, particularly chromium carbide and tungsten carbide may be used as the wear-resistant material. During manufacture, Figs. 2-6 (not shown), ring blanks (10) are clamped together on a rotary arbor (12), grooved by tool bits (20), sprayed with wear-resistant material (21) and, after surplus wear-resistant metal is removed by a grinding wheel (22), the lands (24, 25) are removed by cutting tools (34, 35) to provide the chamfers 32, 33, 39 and 40.
