Abstract
1,225,890. Contactless variable resistors. SIEMENS A.G. 16 Dec., 1969 [17 Dec., 1968], No. 61157/69. Heading H1K. A contactless variable resistor comprises a permanent magnet which is movable relative to a fixed armature and a field plate housed within a non-magnetic layer arranged between the magnet and the armature so that the magnet slides on the non-magnetic layer. As shown, Fig. 1, the two polepieces 2, 3 of a permanent magnet 1 rest against and slide along a brass sheet 5 attached to the surface of a soft iron armature 4. A U-shaped sheet metal frame 8 is attached to the armature 4 to form a tube within which the magnet can slide. A spring 9 is provided to assist the magnetic force in holding the magnet against the brass sheet 5. A field plate (not shown) is mounted in an aperture in the brass plate near the lower edge of the armature so that in the position illustrated the maximum magnetic field is applied to the field plate. The magnet is biased upwards by a helical spring 14 and is pressed against the cap 10 of the enclosure via a ballbearing 11. The cap 10 is threaded on to the bottom section 13 of the enclosure so that the position of the magnet relative to the field plate can be varied to adjust the resistance. A micrometer scale is provided on the outside of the enclosure parts and the rotation of the cap is limited by screws 12 which may also be used to lock the cap in position. The field plate is provided with leads 18 extending out of the base of the enclosure. A coil 19 connected to leads (20) extending through the bottom of the enclosure is provided so that the initial strength of the magnet may be adjusted.
