Abstract
1,225,669. Spinneret assembly for melt spinning composite filaments. ASAHI KASEI KOGYO K.K. 20 June, 1968 [22 June, 1967], No. 29405/68. Heading B5B. A spinneret assembly for the melt spinning of composite filaments of either the conjugate type in which the components are disposed in sideby-side relationship or in eccentric sheath-core relationship is characterized in that the plane 4 in which lies the circumference of the outlet of each extrusion orifice of the spinneret plate forming part of the assembly is disposed at an acute angle to a plane normal to the spinneret axis. The spinneret assembly shown in Fig. 1 is adapted for the melt spinning of conjugate filaments and comprises a circular cover plate 10 bolted to a cylindrical housing 12 in which are located first and second intermediate plates 19 and 22 respectively and a circular spinneret plate 27 supported on the inner peripheral flange 12a of the housing. The upper surface of the cover-plate 10 is provided with a number of short externally threaded inlet pipes 15 each communicating with an inlet bore 16 machined in the cover-plate and adapted to receive the internally threaded union 17 mounted on the delivery end of the feed pipe 18 through which molten polymer is delivered from a spinning pump. All the inlet bores 16 situated on the left hand side of the vertical diametrical plane YY<SP>1</SP> of the spinneret assembly are supplied with a spinning melt which is less viscous than the spinning melt supplied to the remaining inlet bores 16. The melts after flowing through the inlet bores 16 flow through the recesses 20 and ducts 21, 21<SP>1</SP> of the plate 19. The second intermediate plate 22 is provided with an outer circle of ducts 23 and an inner circle of ducts 24. All the ducts 23 communicate with a groove 25 in the lower surface of the plate 22 and all the ducts 24 communicate with a second groove (not shown). The upper surface of the spinneret plate 27 is provided with a number of elongated recesses 28 (Figs. 1 and 2) each of which communicates with a pair of neighbouring outer and inner ducts 23 and 24, thereby constituting a number of separate " conjugating chambers " in which the two streams of melt differing from one another in viscosity meet and flow through to the inlets of the extrusion orifices 29 drilled through the spinneret plate 27. Each of the orifices 29 is situated directly below the centre of each corresponding recess 28. The underside of the spinneret plate 27 is recessed at 32 in such a manner that the plane of the outlet of each orifice 29 is at an acute angle with the flat portion of the spinneret plate recess. The less viscous melt flows through the ducts 23 and the zones of the chambers 28 and the extrusion orifices 29 which are nearer to the periphery of the spinneret plate 27 and the more viscous melt through the ducts 24 and the zones in chambers 28 and orifices 29 which are further from the periphery. Filament deflection which would otherwise be caused by the difference in the viscosities of the two melts pumped through the spinneret assembly is thereby obviated.
