Abstract

1,225,309. Attaching electrical components to circuit boards; assembling force fits. AMP. Inc. 4 Dec., 1968 [21 Dec., 1967], No. 57473/68. Headings B3A and B3U. [Also in Divisions B8 and H2] Terminals T to be inserted into apertures 12 in an insulating panel 10 are forced into a flexible resilient tape 16 to extend from one side thereof substantially at right-angles to the plane of the tape and in a predetermined pattern. The tape with its attached terminals may be helically wound on a storage spool (R, Figs. 15, 16, not shown). A severed length of the tape is then positioned with its terminals T in alignment with guiding mouths 24 of apertures in a tool 20, which may be of nylon or harder material, the apertures in the tool corresponding to those in the panel 10. The tool is then positioned over the panel and moved towards it so that the ends 14a of the terminals enter the panel apertures 12 and portions 14b wedge therein. After soldering of the terminals to the panel, the tape 16 is peeled away, the presence of tool 20 preventing displacement of the terminal. In a second embodiment, Fig. 5, the tool 28 employed comprises two parts hinged together at 34, the parts having at their edges remote from the hinge V-shaped recesses 30c into which the ends 14<SP>1</SP>a of the terminals are pressed, the tape being received in recesses 30a. After the ends 14<SP>1</SP>a have entered the panel apertures the tool 28 is removed and the terminals driven into the apertures by a block (36, Fig. 9, not shown). In a third embodiment, Fig. 10, a tool 40 is provided, the tool comprising upper and lower blocks 42, 48, which are slidable relatively to each other by bundles 44, 50. The apertures in these plates are connected to the edges of the blocks by openings 48a which are relatively staggered when the terminals on the tape 16 are applied to the tool. After entry of the terminals into the panel apertures the handles 44, 50 are moved towards each other to align the slots and allow the tool to be withdrawn laterally from the inserted terminals.
