1,224,858. Improvements in labelling machines. SOC. FRANCAISE D'ETIQUETAGE VIREY & GARNIER. 25 Feb., 1970 [20 Nov., 1969], No. 8962/70. Heading B8F. A device for picking-up labels from a magazine 1 and transferring them to a transfer roller 3 comprises a planetary pick-up roller 5 mounted in an eccentric position in a sleeve 9, and fast with a planet pinion 11 meshing a ring gear 13. A pinion 6 drives the sleeve 9 and is fast with an eccentric 14 acting by way of a rod 15 to oscillate the ring gear 13, so that the pickup roller is driven for constant continuous rotation in direction 9b in the space between the stationary label magazine and the rotating transfer cylinder and for rotation in direction 5a about itself, the latter rotation being retarded as the roller picks up a label by suction from the magazine due to the rotation of the toothed annulus, controlled by the eccentric 14 and rod 15, along a path indicated by the arrows 17 in a direction opposite to that of the pick-up roller, and increased when the label is being applied to the transfer cylinder due to the rotation of the toothed annulus in the same direction as the pick-up roller. As a result of the actions of the toothed annulus, the tangential velocity of the pick-up roller 5 is zero when it picks up a label from the magazine and is increased to be similar to that of the transfer roller 3 when the label is transferred to it as the suction is momentarily released.
