Abstract

1,224,629. Papermaking screen. M. SCHOELLER. 28 June, 1968 [30 June, 1967], No. 31024/68. Heading DIR. An endless screen for a paper making machine comprises three layers of parallel synthetic filaments in which the filaments 1 in a first layer run across the width of the screen, the filaments 2 in a second layer, adjacent the first layer, run lengthwise of the screen and the filaments 3 in a third layer, adjacent the second layer, run across the screen. The filaments in adjacent layers are bonded to each other, e.g. by adhesive 6. There may be a fourth layer of filaments which run lengthwise of the screen. Preferably, (a) the number of filaments per cm. in the third (transverse) layer is between 10/13 and 10/17 ths or 10/23 and 10/27 ths of the number of filaments in the first (transverse) layer, (b) the ratio of the spatial distance between juxtaposed filaments in the first (transverse) layer to their diameter is between 0.8 and 1.8:1 and the number of filaments per cm is between 20 and 45, (c) the ratio of the diameters of the filaments in the third and first (transverse) layers is between 1 and 2:1 e.g. the filaments in the first layer may be 0.10-0.20 mm with the diameter of the filaments in the third layer being 0.15 to 0.25 mm, (d) the number of filaments per cm. in the second (longitudinal) layer is 1/3 to 2/3 of the filaments in the first (transverse) layer, (e) the ratio of the spatial distance between juxtaposed filaments in the second (longitudinal) layer to their diameter is 1.5 to 2.5:1 and the number of filaments is from 8 to 17, (f) the ratio of the diameters of the filaments in the second (longitudinal) and the first (transverse) layers is 1.2 to 2.5:1 e.g. the diameter of the filaments in the second layer may be 0.20-0.30 mm, (g) there are the same number of filaments in the second and fourth (longitudinal) layers and they are in exact vertical register, (h) the ratio of the diameters of the filaments in the fourth and second (longitudinal) layers is between 0.5 and 0.8. The filaments in the second (longitudinal) layer may be polyamide or hot-stretched polyester monofils. The adhesive which bonds the filaments may fill the reentrant wedges and form webs 6 standing on the filaments. The height of the webs 6 may be the same as 'the diameter of the filaments.
