Abstract

1,224,615. Pipeline pigs. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 26 Nov., 1968 [28 Nov., 1967], No. 54141/67. Headings F2N and F2P. A pipeline pig comprises a plurality of flexible interconnected discs 2 of polymeric foam separated by rigid polymeric foam spacers 3, the distance between adjacent discs being in the range of one tenth of the thickness of each individual discs to twice said thickness, and preferably in the range of one-third of the disc thickness to the thickness of each disc. The polymeric foam may be a polyurethane or polyester foam. In the embodiment of Fig. 1, the discs are bonded by epoxy resin 4 to the spacers. In a modification. Fig. 6 (not shown), the spacers and discs are integrally formed from one body member. In a further modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the spacers and discs are secured by adhesive along a flexible shaft or spindle. In the embodiment of Fig. 4, the spacers and discs are interconnected by four tensioned polypropylene strings 9. The face of the leading discs at least may be faced with nylon or polytetrafluoroethylene sheets 8. The pig may be used to remove excess sealant, such as bitumen emulsion, which has been introduced into a gas pipeline to eliminate leaks therein. Sealant bitumen emulsion may be carried through a pipeline between two pigs.
