Abstract

1,224,659. Releasable fastenings. SMITHS INDUSTRIES Ltd. 26 Sept., 1965 [15 Nov., 1968], No. 54208/68. Heading E2A. [Also in Division F2] An end fitting 2 for the outer sheath 6 of a flexible cable 7 (either push-pull or rotation) comprises a hollow plastics body with one end 4 adapted to fit the sheath 6 (e.g. by bonding, moulding in situ, or clamping by a swaged collar 5) and the other end 10 having an opening defined by a smooth edge, and having between its ends latching means comprising an aperture 20 into which extends an arm 22 resiliently urging a projection 26 to project through the aperture into the hollow body, the arm being integral with the body and the projection. The fitting 2 may be mounted on a spigot 45 (e.g. of a speedometer) with a chamfer 47 and groove 49 to effect latching of the arm 22 which may be released by depressing the end 27 of an extension 28 thereof. The sheath 6 may be sealed by a chamfer 48 on the spigot 46 either engaging a rubber washer or distorting a cylindrical lip 40 on the fitting. The shaft 7 if used for rotation, may have a collar 36 fixed thereto.
