Abstract

1,223,789. Container ship cranes; spreaders for handling containers. BROWN BOVERI & CO. Ltd. 15 Dec., 1969 [16 Dec., 1968], No. 61050/69. Headings B8B and B8H. A container ship crane comprises two parallel jib structures 2, each composed of a pair of parallel arms hinged to rock about a parallel axis at their lower ends (not shown) and pivotally connected at their upper ends to opposite ends of a horizontal, rectangular cross-beam assembly 1. Two crabs 3 are mounted on the assembly 1 and are movable in the fore-and-aft direction as is the crane along a track provided on the ship. Each crab carries a pair of spaced pulleys 4 around which a carrier rope 5 runs and is attached to a corner of a horizontal pick-up frame 6 adjustable in length to suit a particular container 7 to be lifted. In the embodiment illustrated in Fig. 2 (not shown, the frame 6 may be turned slightly with respect to the assembly 1 since an axle (41) carrying the two spaced pulleys 4 on one of the crabs 3 can be displaced axially. Complete rotation is provided in a third embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), the assembly 1 being suspended from a turntable ring (11) carried by a frame support (12) pivotally connected between the jib structures 2.
