Abstract
1,223,134. Magnetic storage devices. INTERNATIONAL COMPUTERS Ltd. 12 May, 1969 [13 Sept., 1968], No. 43663/68. Heading H3B. [Also in Division H1] In a production line method of manufacturing a magnetic storage plane, the starting material is a copper/Mylar (Registered Trade Mark)/ Permalloy laminated strip which is etched to form magnetic toroids, part of one of which is shown at 28, Fig. 2, and then heat and pressure bonded to a Mylar/copper strip so that the toroids are embedded in the Mylar 27, Fig. 3, the conductors for the toroids being formed by etching holes through each toroid aperture and plating copper into the holes to electrically join the two copper strips 26 upon which conductor patterns are then etched, Fig. 4. The etching processes are carried out using a photoresist and vacuum printing, followed by develop, wash, dry, etch, wash and dry stages. When the toroid pattern is printed on to the photoresist, a registration pattern is also applied to allow subsequent alignment of the conductor patterns on copper strips 26, the Mylar/copper strip applied in Fig. 3 being slightly narrower than the starting material so that the registration pattern remains visible. The storage plane may have a final Mylar layer applied to each side. In another embodiment, all the above Mylar is replaced by adhesive photoresist, reducing the overall thickness of the plane. Flow diagrams for the two embodiments are given, Figs. 1, 5 (not shown).
