Abstract

1,223,064. Stacked assembly of collapsed buildings. F. E. BIGELOW Jnr. 9 May, 1969 [1 July, 1968], No. 23816/69. Heading B8C. An assembly of buildings for shipping comprises a plurality of collapsed buildings 10 each having a skid 13 with the walls and roof of the building supported there on a plurality of stacking racks 14 secured to and extending upwardly from, each skid to a level above the collapsed building, the buildings being stacked with an upper skid supported on the stacking racks of a lower skid, and the associated skids and stacking racks including engageable surfaces at least one of which provides a wedge 28 which extends at an angle to the horizontal, and means, such as a bolt 26 and nut 27, for fastening together the skids and the stacking racks to limit movement of the skids, in a vertical direction, away from the stacking racks. Preferably each skid has four stacking racks 14 each comprising an I-beam 15 which has a U-shaped retainer bracket 19 welded to its upper end and is itself welded to the upper flange 16 of an I- beam forming one of the runners of the skid, the other flange 17 having its ends inclined upwardly in the manner of a sleigh runner. The hole 25 for the bolt 26 in each flange 17 is elongated, any relative horizontal movement between a beam 16, 17 and a supporting bracket 19 causing a wedge-shaped bracket 28, welded to the base of the bracket 19, to climb the neighbouring inclined end of the beam flange 17 and place the bolt 26 under tension, instead of shear, stress. Complementary wedge surfaces between the stacking racks and the flanges 17 could extend either upwardly, as shown, or downwardly, and could be either in front of, as shown, or behind, a bolt 26.
