Abstract
1,222,878. Automatic control of continuous casting. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO. Inc. July 8, 1968 [July 7, 1967], No.32418/68. Heading G3R. The output of a radiation detector responsive to the amount of molten material passing into a casting groove in the periphery of a rotable wheel automatically controls a valve which determines the rate of flow from a reservoir into the casting groove. In Fig. 1, molten metal, e.g. copper, flows through an outlet nozzle 19 of a tundish 17 into the groove 12 of a rotating casting wheel 11 which is cooled to produce a continuous casting 26 between the wheel and an associated driving band 14. Gamma radiation from a source 31 is applied in the vicinity of the normal level 22 of molten metal in groove 12 so that a radiation detector 33 associated with a photo-multiplier and amplifier 34 produces a pulse output the count rate of which is dependent on the level and the quantity of molten metal flowing from the tundish to the groove. This pulse output, the amplitude of which is maintained constant by feedback to control the high voltage supply 36 to the radiation detector, is applied through an amplifier 38, a unit 40 to eliminate pulses of small amplitude, a rate meter 41 and an indicator-controller 42 to operate a pneumatic follow-up servosystem 46 which maintains the supply of molten metal at the desired value by adjusting the setting of a stainless steel pin 23 relative to nozzle 19. A rate component of control is added by a differentiating circuit 61 and the correction applied by controller 42 is non-linear, being initially greater than proportional for large errors.
