1,222,859. Luminescent materials. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 13 Dec., 1968 [16 Dec., 1967], No. 59369/68. Heading C4S. A luminescent material of the sanbornite structure for luminescent screens as in LP and HAMV lamps for instance comprisesBa x Sr y Eu p . Si 2 O 5 wherein x+y+p=1, 0À40#y#0 and 0À10#p#0À005, preferably 0À05#p#0À01 the europium being divalent. When replacing Ba by Sr, y is preferably between 0À05 and 0À35. Excitation may be by long and short wavelength C.V. and deep-blue radiation with 505 nm. emission for y = 0 shifting to shorter wavelengths (e.g. 490 to 495 nm.) when Sr partly replaces Ba. In preparation, the starting mix is heated to 1100‹ to 1200‹ C. for 2 hours, cooled, ground and re-fired as before in a reducing atmosphere of carbon monoxide obtained by placing fine-grained carbon in the vicinity of the mix during heating. An excess of one of the constituents in the firing mix ensures a smooth reaction, the condition 0À80< < x+y+p< <- 1À10 being satisfied wherein x, y, p are the grm. moles of BaO, SrO and EuO per 2 grm. moles of SiO 2 in the starting mix. The starting mix preferably includes a fluoride of Ba Sr or Eu.
