Abstract

1,222,772. Making propane-butane mixtures. UNION OIL CO. OF CALIFORNIA. 25 April, 1969, No. 21288/69. Heading C5E. Propane-butane mixtures (LPG) are made by catalytic hydrocracking a mineral oil boiling below 650‹ F., and preferably below 500‹ F., at a temperature in the range 500‹ to 800‹ F. and at a pressure above 400 p.s.i.g. The catalyst comprises a minor amount of a Group VIII metal on a crystalline silicons zeolite base, e.g. Ni and/or Co on an alumino-silicate molecular sieve base. Suitable feedstocks are light and heavy gasolines, light gas oil and kerosene, and the feedstock should be completely vaporized in the reaction zone. Temperature, pressure and space velocity are correlated to give at least 40 vol. per cent LPG per pass, based on feed, and to minimize methane-ethane production, a maximum pressure of 3000 p.s.i.g. and space velocities in the range 0À5 to 12 being mentioned. Unconverted feedstock is recycled or passed to a second reactor. In the catalyst a substantial proportion of the ion-exchange capacity is satisfied by hydrogen ions or polyvalent metal ions, including rare eath metals. Natural or synthetic zeolites may be employed. In specific examples, C 5 and higher hydrocarbons amounting to over 50 vol. per cent of the feed are produced.
