Abstract

1,221,661. Separating liquids, dehydrating glycol. COMBUSTION ENG. Inc. 1 March, 1968, No. 10173/68. Headings BIB, B1D and B1X. Separating apparatus for use in oil fields, for separating oil and water mixtures produced by the oil well (Fig. 1) or for separating glycol, used for drying natural gas, from absorbed water (Figs. 2 to 5, not shown), comprises a vessel 1 heated by combustion gases from burner 3, which pass through tube 2 and up stack 4, and a heat exchanger 14 through which liquid under treatment is recirculated to conserve combustion heat and reduce the temperature of gas leaving the stack to a safe level. In Fig. 1, vessel 1 acts as as a settling tank, from which water, oil or emulsion and gas are discharged at different levels. Separation is assisted by the heating, and an optimum mixture of oil and water is determined by one or two valves 11 and pumped through the heat exchanger at a rate controlled by valve 13, whose setting is varied by temperature sensor 20, to join the incoming well product at 5. In Figs. 2 to 5, glycol and water from a gas drying stage are separated by boiling off the waiter in vessel (30), from which the glycol is returned to the drying stage through ballast tank (37). The drawings illustrate the different routes and take-off/return points for the glycol which is recirculated through heat exchanger (34).
