Abstract
1,221,651. Cable joints. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. and CENTRAL ELECTRICITY GENERATING BOARD. 20 March, 1968 [20 March, 1967], No. 13021/67. Heading H2E. In a cable joint wherein a system of passages is provided for the passage of insulating fluid through solid insulation surrounding the jointed cable ends, part of the passage system comprises a passage which is shaped so as to follow a non- cylindrical equipotential surface in the electric field which arises in use. As shown, a joint is made by stripping back lead sheath 12, copper tape 11, screening tape 10 and insulation 8 to reveal conductor 4 with oil duct 6. A steel mandrel 14, temporarily plugged, is pushed into conductor 4 and an aluminium ferrule 16 attached. Another cable is similarly prepared. Oil-impregnated rolls 18 are slipped over the insulation 8; the ferrules 16 are connected by an aluminium coupler 20; an insulating tube 22, which accommodates a stress ring 26, is slid over coupler 20; a stress core 48 is positioned at each end of tube 22; and on insulating tube 52 and a copper tube 86 sealed at 92 are slid over the assembly. These members define oil passages 32, 34, 36, 30, 38, 28, 72, 74, 76, 100, 102, 98. The passages 72, 76 follow an equipotential surface, preferably 35% (where the conductor potential is 100%). The surfaces of passages 38, 72, 76 are conductive; passages 72, 76 being electrically connected at 54 e.g. by aluminium spinnings, and passage 38 being connected to stress ring 26 at 40. Lead or copper wire 80 is soldered to sheath 12 at 84, wound over a conductive surface 63 on core 48, connected to a brass ring (not shown) in a recess 64 to provide an earth stress-core electrode. Members 22, 48, 52 are preferably silica-filled epoxy resin castings. As applied to a stop-feed joint (Figs. 2A, 2B, not shown), a solid aluminium coupler (20<SP>1</SP>) and a stress ring (26<SP>1</SP>) block oil flow through passages corresponding to 32, 36, 38. Radial oil passages (34) contain valves (122). The passage (76<SP>1</SP>) corresponding to passage 76 is blocked and split longitudinally, so that oil flows from a passage (72<SP>1</SP>) through the lower half of passage (76<SP>1</SP>) and back along the upper half thereof.
