Abstract

1,220,890. Grooving tyres. DUNLOP CO. Ltd. 25 Nov., 1968 [29 Nov., 1967], No. 55761/68. Heading B4B. [Also in Division B7] A tyre is produced by applying a tread of unvulcanized compound 3 to a treadless tyre 1, cutting the required tread pattern, removing the surplus tread compound, and subsequently vulcanizing the tread. An electrically heated cutting blade 7 is adjustable by means of a screw 8 on a radius rod 5, pivotable at O. The tyre is rotatably mounted on a support 4. To cut a transverse groove 9, the blade 7 is adjusted on the rod 5 to the required groove radius, the support 4 is locked against rotation, and the rod 5 is displaced across the tread surface; for a circumferential groove, the blade 7 is engaged with the tyre in the required axial position, with the rod 5 fixed, and the tyre is rotated on the support 4. The method is applicable to both new and retread tyres.
