Abstract
1,220,644. Nuclear power plant. EUROPEAN ATOMIC ENERGY COMMUNITY. 7 May, 1969 [24 May, 1968], No. 23299/69. Heading G6C. In a space station nuclear power plant, thermal transfer is effected by heat pipes and electricity is produced by thermionic generators. The reactor 1 is controlled by the movable reflectors 4, and the radiation shield 2 separates the reactor from the cooling cone 3. The emitters of the thermionic converters 5 are coupled to heat pipes traversing the reactor core. Collector cooling is effected by a liquid metal circuit operated by the electro-magnetic pump 6. The reflector is cooled by the duct 7 from the main circuit. Heat from the liquid metal circuit is radiated from the core 3 which is thermally coupled to the metal circuit by the heat pipes 9 inside the metal envelope 8. The heat pipes are of steel with sodium as the working medium.
