Abstract
1,220,424. Melt spinning synthetic polymers. TORAY INDUSTRIES Inc. 17 March, 1969 [21 March, 1968; 27 March, 1968; 13 May, 1968], No. 13995/69. Heading B5B. Synthetic organic thermoplastic polymers are melt spun by extruding the molten polymer downwardly through a spinneret having a number of extrusion orifices, drawing the extruded filaments downwardly through a stationary column of air 300 to 500 mm. long immediately below the spinneret to subject the filaments to draw-down while they are still molten, and subsequently drawing the filaments downwardly through a zone in which they are in contact with air introduced into the path of the filaments by suction flow generated by a downward air flow accompanying the downward movement of the filaments. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 6, an atmospheric air shut-off chimney 12 having a length of 300 to 500 mm. is disposed surrounding and immediately beneath a spinneret 11 and has connected to it a first flow control chimney 17 provided with numerous holes 15. The first flow control chimney is in turn continued by a second flow control chimney 18 provided with numerous holes 19 and with funnel-shaped flow adjusting members 20. The filaments 16 extruded through the spinneret 11 are cooled by air currents a sucked into the chimney by the air current b travelling downwards with the filaments. As the filaments are drawn through the second flow control chimney 18, the air current b is heated by the filaments and a rising air current c is formed by convection, deflected by the members 20 and discharged through the holes 19 as shown at d. The air currents above each member 20 are not disturbed by the rising air currents c formed below each member 20 whereby the filaments are uniformly cooled without being caused to vibrate.
