In a printing machine of the kind in which an inked ribbon overlies a printing plate and paper to be printed is forced on to the ribbon by a travelling roller platen, so that the paper receives an impression from the plate through the ribbon, the inked ribbon R being held clear of a plate-supporting part of bed 12 unless a printing plate is present between a fixed butment 22 and resiliently biased movable abutments 42. When the plate, which may be an embossed card, is released from abutment 22, spring 80 drives ejector 40 towards abutment 22, removing the plate by movement of the abutments 42, which are mounted on the ejector. At the same time ribbon lifter 70 is rotated about the axis of mounting sections 74, as its crank section 72 is moved by the ejector, and arms 76 rise to lift the ribbon, so that a further plate may be inserted in turn, returning the ejector and lowering the ribbon by moving abutment 42 to the position they occupy when a plate is present. An operator may insert a plate manually, with the help of finger recess 28. During printing the abutments 42, which are resiliently mounted on ejector 40, depress when the roller platen passes over them.
