Abstract
1,219,696. Reactor control rods; radiation absorbing materials. BROWN, BOVERI/ KRUPP REAKTORBAU G.m.b.H. 5 Sept., 1969 [5 Sept., 1968], No. 44159/69. Headings G6C and G6R. In a high temperature nuclear reactor control rod, a boron compound is distributed through a metal matrix, the melting point of the compound being higher than that of the matrix. The compound may be boron nitride, ferroboron or chromium boride and the matrix may consist of copper, aluminium or cupro-nickel. As the boron compound does not become molten during the formation, new compounds are not formed with the metal of the matrix and embrittlement is prevented.
