Abstract
1,219,323. Terminating cables. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 17 Jan., 1968 [18 Jan., 1967], No. 2588/68. Heading H2E. A terminated high voltage cable, especially for use in apparatus for determining the ionization level of the cable, comprises a conductor 12, which may be covered with semiconducting tape (14, Fig. 1, not shown); insulation 16; a grounded shield comprising a semi-conducting layer 18 and metallic tape 20; an outer jacket 22; and a semi-conductive coating 24 having a predetermined resistance per square and extending for a predetermined length on insulation 16 from the shield 18, 20 to the conductor 12 such that on application of a voltage for which the cable is designed, the coating 24 has a substantially linear current characteristic and the longitudinal gradient of the applied voltage at the surface of coating 24 does not exceed the ionization level of the coated terminus. The terminus may be protected by insulating tape (26, Fig. 14, not shown), e.g. polyvinyl chloride. Layer 16 may be cross-linked polyethylene or ethylenepropylene with clay fillers; tape 20 copper; jacket 22 polyvinyl chloride; and coating 24 high resistance paint comprising carbon black filler and resin binder.
