Abstract

1,219,110. Spinneret plates for melt-spinning. PRODUITS CHIMIQUES PECHINEY-SAINT GOBAIN. 11 April, 1968 [13 April, 1967], No. 17702/68. Heading B5B. A spinneret plate for melt spinning filaments of synthetic organic thermoplastic material is provided with extrusion orifices each having first and second parts which are contiguous, the second part being downstream of the first part and increasing in mean diameter in the downstream direction, the largest mean diameter of the second part being 1À5 to 3À5 times, preferably 1À5 to 2À5 times, the mean diameter of the first part. The filaments produced may be drawn down in a thermal conditioning zone and thereafter, after being solidified by further cooling, may be drawn. Each extrusion orifice may have a third part upstream of and contiguous with the first part, the third part increasing in mean diameter in the upstream direction and extending to the upstream face of the spinneret plate. Each extrusion orifice may also have a fourth part downstream of and contiguous with the second part, the fourth part being of uniform cross-section throughout its length and extending to the downstream face of the spinneret plate. The fourth part may be of similar cross-sectional shape to the desired cross-sectional shape of the extruded filaments. Each of the four parts of each extrusion orifice may be of circular cross-section and each of the parts may have a common axis perpendicular to the spinneret plate. The third, first, second and fourth parts of each extrusion orifice may be respectively frusto conical, cylindrical, frusto conical and cylindrical. The length of the first part of each extrusion orifice may be at least 1À5 times its diameter. The length of the second part of each extrusion orifice may be 0À2 to 3 times its largest diameter. The sum of the lengths of the second and fourth parts of each extrusion orifice may be 0À2 to 3 times the diameter of the fourth part. The second or the fourth parts of two or more adjacent extrusion orifices may intersect whereby longitudinally welded filaments are extruded. The drawing down of the filaments in the thermal conditioning zone may result in each filament being elongated by a factor of at least 1000, of which 9/10 ths occurs during the drawing down.
