Abstract
1,219,098. Food storage atmosphere control. SULZER BROS. Ltd. 15 Dec., 1967 [27 Jan., 1967], No. 57130/67. Heading A2D. The oxygen content in a cold store is reduced to produce a controlled atmosphere therein by withdrawing air from the store at a rate which is adjusted in dependence on the proportion of oxygen in the atmosphere in the store, mixing the withdrawn air with fuel gas, causing the mixture to undergo flameless combustion in the presence of a catalyst, during which some of the air is combined, separating carbon dioxide from the resulting combustion gases by means of an absorbent, heating the mixture awaiting combustion by heat exchange with the resulting combustion gases, and then returning the combustion gases to the store. Fuel gas, e.g. propane or butane, supplied from a cylinder 15, is fed initially to a burner 27 to heat a combustion device 12. Air, extracted from a store (1) by blower (not shown), is fed by a pipe 10 through a flowmeter 11 into a distribution chamber 31 of the device 12, whence it flows down ducts 29 of a heat exchanger into a feed chamber 32 and then up through catalyst beds 34 of granulated palladium into further ducts 30 of the heat exchanger. The air flows over a bi-metal strip control 37 in a pipe 36 to a water spray cooler 38 and thence via a pressure regulating valve 43 in a pipe 42 through a carbon dioxide absorption apparatus (3) back into the store (1). As soon as the temperature of the combustion device 12 reaches about 350C. a temperature sensor 47 closes the valve 48 to extinguish the burner 27 and opens a valve 18. Fuel gas is then supplied via valves 17, 18, 19, a flowmeter 20, and valves 21, 22 to a pipe 14 that feeds the fuel gas into the air flowing in pipe 10. The height of a rod 25, supporting a photoelectric control device 13 associated with the flowmeter 11, is manually adjusted according to the particular fuel gas being used. The rod 25 is also mechanically linked to the valve 21 to regulate the pressure of the fuel gas. The flowmeter 20 controls the setting of the valve 22. The pressure of the fuel gas entering the flowmeter 20 is controlled by the valve 19, operated by control line 19a, to equal that of the air in the pipe 10, i.e. 1 atmosphere absolute. Valve 17 is opened only when the flowmeter 11 detects a sufficient flow of air. As the heat of combustion increases the temperature within the device 12, a trap 35 is opened by the bi-metal strip control 37 to allow cooling air to enter the bottom of the combustion device 12 to maintain the temperature therein below 600C. and so prevent the formation of detectable amounts of carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide. A by-pass line 45 and valve 44 are also provided to allow the atmosphere in the store (1) to be circulated through the absorption apparatus alone if required. The atmosphere controlled cold store may be used for the storage of fruit such as apples, vegetables, flowers and fungi.
