Abstract

1,218,881. Joining yarns by welding. GLANZSTOFF A.G. 16 Jan., 1969 [24 Feb., 1968], No. 2529/69. Heading D1W. A method for uniting the ends of yarns of thermoplastics material by welding comprises placing the ends to be united together in parallel relation, twisting the ends over a length of 2-10 cm. with a twist of 1-4 T/cm. and clamping at the ends of the twisted section, the twisted group of threads between the clamping positions being brought to melting temperature over a length of 0.5-4 mm. Apparatus for carrying out the method comprises a frame 1, two clamping members having jaws 6 and 7, and an electrical resistance heating element 3, the two clamping members being spaced one from the other, one jaw 6 of each member being fixed on the frame 1 while the other jaw 7 is connected through a swivel joint 15 with the fixed jaw 6 and can be forced against the jaw 6 by means of a helical spring 14, the electric resistance heater 3 being positioned 'between the clamping members and immediately adjacent one member whereby threads clamped in the members pass through the heating zone of the element 3. The jaws 6 each comprise three shaped spaced apart plates 8 which mesh with similar shaped spaced apart plates 9 of the jaws 7, a thread groove 16 preferably being provided in the plates. The heating element 3 comprises two hollow rods with a platinum alloy wire 2 passing therethrough.
