Abstract
1,218,190. Incorporating ingredients into hydrophilic colloids. GEVAERT-AGFA N. V. Oct. 2, 1968, No.46459/67. Heading G2C. A method of incorporating into a hydrophilic colloid composition a colour coupler or maskforming component carrying at least one sulpho group and/or carboxyl group in salt form comprises forming a dispersion in water of an organic solution of the said component either by dispersing the said component in a mixture of water and at least one poorly water-miscible organic solvent which has a solubility in water of at most 25% by weight at room temperature, or by dissolving the component in such a poorly water-miscible solvent and dispersing the solution in water and then (a) removing substantially all of the said solvent(s) during or after the formation of said dispersion forming thereby an aqueous solution of the said compound and admixing the said aqueous solution with the said hydrophilic colloid composition; or (b) admixing the resulting dispersion with the said hydrophilic colloid composition and simultaneously and/or subsequently removing substantially all of the said solvent(s) forming thereby a solution of the said compound in the said hydrophilic colloid composition. Alternatively the said component may be dissolved in the said solvent(s), and the organic solution formed admixed with an aqueous hydrophilic colloid composition substantially all of the said solvent(s) being simultaneously and/or subsequently removed. A wetting agent may be present when an organic compound or a dispersion thereof is mixed with water or an aqueous composition. The said component may be converted in situ into the said salt form by starting from the said component in its free acid form and dissolving the said component in the said organic solvent with or without water in the presence of alkali. The poorly watermiscible solvent may be removed by evaporation, preferably under reduced pressure and/or by applying heat. A minor amount of a solvent that is miscible with water in all proportions may be used in conjunction with the said poorly water-miscible solvent. The hydrophilic colloid composition may bean aqueous solution or melted gel of hydrophilic colloid, (and the colloid may be gelatin) or a lightsensitive silver halide colloid composition.
