Abstract
1,217,644. Forging rivets. E. GARLASCHI. 8 April, 1969 [6 April, 1968], No. 17763/69. Heading B3H. A rivet forging apparatus comprises a fixed die 8 with a pin 6 slidable therein, a first punch 5 to force a length of wire 4 into the die and against the pin to form an axial cavity at one end of the wire and a second punch 14 to head the other end of the wire after it has been moved partially out of the die by the pin. The pin then moves the headed rivet further out of the die so that a forked gripper 9 can grasp the rivet. The length of wire 4 is cut from a continuous wire 3 by a blade 2 which also moves the wire to the die. The pin is initially in its rearmost position when the wire is forced into the die by the punch 5. The punches are mounted on a block 27 connected through linkage 26, 46 to a crank 44. The rotation of the punch-carrying head 42 is achieved through linkage by a cam 29 mounted on the same shaft 30 as a cam 32 which reciprocates the blade 2. The pin 6 and the gripper 9 are moved in sequence by cams 12, 16 mounted on a third shaft 33. The crankshaft 25 and the shafts 30, 33 are drivably connected by gearing 34, 35. The punch 5 is retracted after formation of the cavity and the pin advanced. A block 11 is moved behind the rod 7 of the pin to prevent rearward movement during heading by the punch 14. After retraction of the punch 14 the pin ejects the rivet from the die. The gripper 9 moves in a plane normal to the die cavity to grip the rivet and one end of the rivet is tripped by a block 10 and falls from the gripper into a tray.
