Abstract
1,217,035. Monocarboxylic acids. POLITECHNIKA SLASKA IM-W. PSTROWSKIEGO. 28 March, 1968 [28 March, 1967 (2); 30 Sept., 1967], No. 14902/68. Heading C2C. A method of controlling the oxidation of a feedstock containing a carbohydrate or polyhydric alcohol comprises treating the feedstock with an oxidizing agent, and removing the monocarboxylic acid so formed from the reaction mixture so that the feedstock is maintained in the reaction mixture at a concentration greater than that of the monocarboxylic acid. Suitable specified oxidizing agents include nitric acid, nitrous acid, nitrogen oxides, halogens, oxygen, ozone, enzymes and microbiological oxidizing agents. The acid may be removed by means of ion-exchange electrodialysis or sorption. The oxidation may be carried electrochemically, e.g. by using the apparatus shown in Fig. 1 below wherein 2 and 3 are anion- and cation-exchange diaphragms respectively, or by means of a continuous flow process (not shown). Examples describe the preparation of 2-keto-D-gluconic acid by the oxidation of D-fructose; 2-keto-1- gulonic acid by the fermentation of sorbitol, and lactic acid by the fermentation of saccharose.
