Abstract
1,216,555. Refrigerators. HUGHES AIRCRAFT CO. 2 April, 1968 [3 April, 1967], No. 15741/68. Heading F4H. A cryogenic refrigerator includes a hot chamber 42, a cold chamber 44 and an intermediate temperature chamber 22 which are separated by hot and cold displacer pistons 24 and 28 and are interconnected through regenerators 46 and 48. The displacers are driven by a crank mechanism 30, the hot chamber receives heat from a heat source 54 which may have a temperature of 1000 F., an ambient temperature cooler is provided, and cold is withdrawn at 52. The working gas volume is constant and compression and expansion occur as a result of charges in average gas temperature caused by variations in the quantities of gas present in the hot and cold chambers. The motor which drives the crank mechanism 30 is arranged with its rotor inside, and its stator outside, the sealed refrigerator housing, Fig. 2 (not shown). The refrigerator may be used to cool an infra-red detector in an earth orbiting vehicle.
