Abstract
1,216,444. Abrasive tools. BARNES DRILL CO. 29 May, 1969 [1 July, 1968], No. 27305/69. Heading B3D. An abrading tool, such as a honing stone, grinding wheel, or cut-off wheel comprises a body of solid and wearable matrix material having at least one face for engaging a workpiece, and an array of elongated fibres 33 of abrasive material embedded in the body and having ends exposed at the working face in a preselected pattern, the fibres being anchored in the body and braced for a substantial distance therein and having a hardness greater than that of the matrix material. The fibres may be of boron nitride, boron carbide, silicon carbide, titanium carbide, alumina tungsten carbide or zirconium or other abrasive having a Knoop hardness above 1000, and may have a diameter of 0À004 or 0À008 inch and are formed by vapour deposition on a tungsten filament 34 of 0À0005 inch diameter. The fibres are arranged in rows with the fibres is staggered to eliminate forming lines on the workpiece in a matrix of polymide material or epoxy. The fibres may be disposed perpendicularly or at an angle to the working surface. As applied to a grinding wheel, the fibres 42, Fig. 9, may be arranged radially when the periphery of the wheel is to be used, in which case they also act as a reinforcement for the wheel, or may be arranged parallel to the axis of the wheel, Fig. 11, when the end surface of the wheel is to be used. The abrading tool may be in the form of a honing stone 10, Fig. 3, for use in a tool for honing a bore 14, Fig. 2, in a workpiece 15, the tool having four stones which can be radially adjusted by conical portions 22 on a rod 23 axially adjustable relative to a hollow shaft 24 which rotates and reciprocates the tool.
