Abstract

1,215,953. Electroluminescence. AUTOTELIC INDUSTRIES Ltd. 20 Dec., 1967 [12 April, 1967], No. 57755/67. Heading C4S. [Also in Division H1] A display screen comprises a first panel including an electroluminescent layer 5 and a conductor matrix 6, 7 for selectively activating parts of the layer and a second panel 2 including a plurality of transparent conductive strips 80 adjacent the first panel, layers of photoconductive, opaque conductive and electroluminescent material 81, 79, 82 and a segmented electrode 83. A TV screen comprises three panels; in the first a moving constant intensity spot of light is produced in accordance with vertical and horizontal synchronizing pulses; in the second panel extraneous light is prevented from passing and the spot may be amplified; in the third the light intensity is varied in accordance with an amplitude signal. The first panel comprises e.1. strips between a crossed matrix of conductor strips 6, 7, the latter deposited on a glass substrate; in colour screens each element 5 and strip 6 is replaced by three e.1. elements, each with a conductive strip. The elements may be activated by a potential between the conductive strips or by an electron beam in a C.R.T. Panel 3 is also an image intensifier comprising electrode 84, on a glass plate 90, a CdS photo-conductive layer 85, an opaque conductive layer 86, a ZnS e.1. layer 87 and electrode 88. Potential is supplied to each vertical electrode 6 by an associated transistor circuit controlled by a gate circuit. The transistor circuit at the same time applies a potential to the preceding vertical strip in panel 2 to prevent the passage of light. Other transistor circuits also controlled by gates apply potential to strips 7. For colour TV layer 87 and electrode 88 are in strip form; several strips of the same colour may be interconnected to form a few groups to which the signal is applied via a transformer. In another embodiment a variable intensity moving spot is produced in panel 1 using triple diode circuits controlled by clock circuits, panel 3 then provides constant amplification. In a modified panel 2 the p.c. layer is divided into diagonal strips having wavy edges such that each strip comprises a series of roundcornered squares.
