Abstract

1,215,617. Forming a metal coating on an electrically insulating article. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. Oct. 15, 1968 [Oct. 18, 1867], No. 48885/68. Headings C7B and C7F. A local metal coating is formed on an electrically insulating article by sensitizing the surface of the article, then chemically depositing a uniform electrically conductive metal layer on the article from a solution containing a salt of the metal and a reducing agent, then placing the article in an electro-plating bath and electro-depositing a metal layer on a desired area of the article which area is bounded by a groove in the article, wherein electrical connection for electro-deposition is made to the desired area, wherein the depth and angle of incision of the groove are matched to the electroplating bath and current density used so that no metal is electro-deposited in the groove, wherein the composition of the electro-plating bath is such that the bath dissolves the chemically deposited metal layer in the groove and over the article outside the desired area, and wherein the groove is formed in the electrically insulating article either during manufacture of the article or before the chemical deposition process is performed. In an example an operating knob for radio apparatus is electro-plated over only part of its surface. The knob is moulded from a coloured acrylonitrilebutadiene-styrene resin, is cylindrical in shape, has a boss on one side whereby it can be secured to a shaft and on the other side is provided with a circular groove which during electro-plating prevents plating of the area enclosed by the groove. The groove is 0À5 mm. deep and has an angle of incison of 11 degrees (i. e. the angle subtended by the walls of the groove at the apex of the groove). The knob is degreased and then treated with solutions containing the following- a) H 2 SO 4 and H 2 CrO 4 b) SnCl 2 2HO 2 O and HCl c) PdCI 2 and HCl d) NiCl 2 6H 2 O, CoSO 4 H 2 O, sodium acetate, sodium tartrate, sodium citrate, (C 2 H 5 ) 2 HNBH 3 , isopropanol and lead acetate. Electrical connection was made to the knob by means of its boss and the knob was electro-plated withi) Cu from an aqueous electrolyte containing CuSO 4 5H 2 O, H 2 SO 4 and a brightening agent using 2A/sq. dm. ii) Ni from a bath at pH 4À5 and 50-55‹ C. containing NiCl 2 6H 2 O, NiSO 4 6H 2 O, H 3 BO 3 and brighteners using 4A/sq. dm. iii) Cr from an electrolyte at 50‹ C. containing CrO 3 , H 2 SO 4 and Cr 2 O 3 using 20A/sq. dm. After electro-depositing the Cu, the chemically deposited Ni-Co had dissolved and the resin was exposed.
