Abstract
1,215,265. Treatment of radioactive waste. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. 14 May, 1969 [5 June, 1968], No. 24486/69. Heading G6R. Solid radioactive waste is transferred from a chamber A through pipe 10 via valve 12 to a container B coupled to the pipe 10 at 19; a material, e.g. bitumen, which is solid at ambient temperature, is introduced in liquid or viscous form into the container B at 22 until the level is above the coupling 19, the material is then solidified in the region of the coupling 19, and the solidified mass is cut at this point to separate the full container for disposal. A new container may then be placed in position and heat applied by means of jacket 16 to melt the material blocking pipe 10. The jacket 16 may also be used to circulate refrigerant liquid to accelerate solidification of the bitumen.
