Abstract

121,517. Nash, R. J., and Alexander, G. H. Dec. 19, 1917. Indicators actuated by pressure of head of liquid.-Relates to apparatus for indicating the pressure-head or the level of a liquid, of the kind in which a fluid-operated indicator is arranged at a distance from the liquid container or conduit and is separated therefrom by a region of entrapped air or other gas. The apparatus comprises a vessel b containing entrapped air, the vessel being in communication with the bottom of the liquid-container a and with a U-tube h containing the indicating liquid. The height of the air space in the vessel is small compared with its diameter, so that the liquid level in the vessel is maintained nearly constant. A pipe e dipping into the vessel serves to determine the datum level of the liquid in the vessel and also allows the passage of air into or from the vessel to restore the datum level. In a liquid flow meter, the vessel is connected by pipes o, p, Fig. 4, to a chamber k in the pipe l through which the liquid flows, the connexions being made on opposite sides of a perforated diaphragm m.
