Abstract
1,214,131. Door closing mechanism. BRENT METAL WORKS Ltd. 20 Feb., 1968 [21 Nov., 1966], No. 51979/66. Heading E2M. A closing mechanism for a double-swing door has a helically coiled spring 12 with its longitudinal axis parallel to and disposed midway between the slide bars 6, 7. These bars have toothed racks 6a and 7a respectively between which fits a toothed pinion 9 secured to the actuating spindle 8. Each bar supports two lugs 10 and 11 which are at such a distance apart as to keep the spring 12 slightly compressed in the rest position shown i.e. when the door is closed. When the door is opened the bars 6 move in opposite directions as they rotate about spindle 8, pinion 9 and the spring is compressed by one of each pair of lugs 10 and 11 thus increasing its stored energy. The mechanism is secured to or embedded in the door and contained between two planes defined by the front and rear surfaces of the door rail. A hydraulic damper device is employed to control the rate at which the spring means returns the door to its closed position after rotation of the latter.
