Abstract
1,214,087. Polyesters containing sulphonate groups. TORAY INDUSTRIES Inc. 31 Oct., 1968, No. 51629/68. Heading C3R. A process for the production of modified polyesters of improved dye affinity entails introducing to the polyester producing reaction mixture, before the final polycondensation step, 0À5 to 8 mol per cent based on the acid component of the reaction mixture, of a phenol sulphonate salt selected from the alkali metal salts of m-phenol sulphonic acid, 2-chlorophenol - 4 - sulphonic acid, 2 - naphthol - 8- sulphonic acid and resorcinol-5-sulphonic acid, and the lithium salts of p-phenol sulphonic acid and hydroquinone sulphonic acid, the sulphonated groups becoming incorporated into the polymer chain by means of an ether linkage. Examples relate to the modification with some of the above compounds, of, (1)-(4), (7) and (9)-(12) polyethylene terephthalate; (5) and (8) a copolymer from dimethyl terephthalate, ethylene glycol and diethylene glycol; and (6) a copolymer from dimethylterephthalate, dimethyl adipate and ethylene glycol.
